Show Broncos Dropped from Tie in ICAC Baseball Race ! Two losses to Carbon College Thursday afternoon dropped the College of Southern Utah Bron-ca Bron-ca baseball squad from a tie for first place in the southern divl-sln divl-sln of the Intermountain Collegiate Colleg-iate Athletic Conference, Into a tie for second place. Dixie College was elevated into the number one spot, by splitting with the Eagles Friday and dropping drop-ping Snow College twice on Thursday. The Broncos remained In the running for the division championship, cham-pionship, however, by defeating the Snow Badgers twice Friday. Coach Cleo Pettys crew is fac-ed fac-ed with the necessity of winning its four remaining games with the Rebels of Dixie to stay in the running. Carbon, also tied for second, has four games remaining with the Snow Badgers, who have yet to win a conference game. A split anywhere along the line for the Broncos could put them out of the running. The Broncos will make their first crack at the Rehels Friday afternoon in a double header slated slat-ed for the St. George municipal field. The following Thursday the two teams will return to Cedar Ce-dar City for another double header head-er to finish out the season. In the four-game week end . series the Broncos lost to Carbon 5 to 1 and 1 to 0. They bounced back with two wins over Snow College 30 to 0 and 12 to 2. In the first contest with Carboi Vai Labrum was tabbed for four runs in the first Inning of play and a fifth tally was pushed over by the Eagles in the second sec-ond frame. Gerald Talbot, who collected three of the Broncos' six hits scored in the fifth frame for the only Bronco score. Travis Nelson singled behind Talbot to score him. In posting the win Carbon collected only seven hits, buet capitalized on three walks and a wild pitch in the four-run first inning. Gary Anderson, who lost a three hitter to Carbon earlier in the season, was again defeated In the second game Thursday 1 to 0 with the single score coming in the bottom half of the final inning of play. The run was unearned. un-earned. Both clubs missed opportunities opportuni-ties to score early In the game. Bronco left two men on base in the first Inning, advanced Larry Snith, leadoff man, to third in tre second and had a man on third In the fifth, but could not get them around. Likewise Carbon threatened with runners on third base in both the fourth and sixth innings. in-nings. Lary Smith of Cedar City plcthed a four hit shutout over the Snow Badgers the following; day as the Broncos collected two runs in the first and added an Insurance tally in the fifth for a 3 to 0 win. Eric Gardner and Ronnie Adams were the big hitters hit-ters each with two hits in three official trips. In the second game Labrum came back onto the mound for the Broncos and won going away 12 to 2. Labrum held the Badgers Badg-ers to only four hits and the Broncos collected 10 hits with Adams getting three hits and Gardner, Swenson and Labrum each collecting two hits in the seven inning contest The Broncos Bron-cos had a big fifth Inning putting put-ting together six of the 10 hits and pushing in eight runs. |
