Show Federal Assistance Controls Advocated , By William G.Bruhn Utah's rural counties need stabilizing Industries to insure future growth, William G. Bruhn, candidate for the first congressional congress-ional district, told members of the Kiwanls Club of Cedar City Monday evening. In the past the trend has been toward a depopulation of outlying outly-ing counties with a resultant uneven un-even distribution of wealth. If Utah is to enjoy a healthy economy then the state must grow in all sections, Mr. Bruhn said. Thirteen of 25 counties In the first congressional district have s'lown population decreases In th.- past 10 years. Of 79 cities and towns in the 1,000 or higher population bracket, 20 have registered reg-istered decreases in the past decade, dec-ade, he added. He said vigorous representation was needed in Washington to Incurs In-curs Utah its share of small defense de-fense industry. Federal assistance to education Is also a must, the candidate stated, as a means of national survival. We can no longer look upon education as what we would like 10 have for our children chil-dren but as a means of national survival. This national assistance could and must be controlled, however, similar to the equalization equaliza-tion program that is now carried on by the state of Utah and could carry no more controls than under un-der the present land grant system. sys-tem. Mr. Bruhn also pledged to work for proper development and distribution dis-tribution of Colorado River power, warning that Utah could lose the benefits accruing from this project unless a constant vigil Is maintained. , |
