Show Cedar Redmen Win State Baseball Crown I The State Class B Baseball championship belongs to the Cedar Ce-dar High School Redmen. Traveling to Richfield for the state playoffs the Redmen came back Friday afternoon with the crown all wrapped up in a t to 0 shutout victory over the Wildcats. Wild-cats. Fred Esplin, lanky right hand-er hand-er on the mound, threw a five hitter at the Richfield crew and he was backed up by some fine defensive play and an alert offensive of-fensive to come up with the victory. vic-tory. The Redmen showed that they were championship material by taking advantage of every break to come up with the convincing victory. Scoring in the first inning of play the Redmen were never behind be-hind In the seven innings. There were no particular l.eros at tl.e plate, either, as seven of the Red-men Red-men collected a hit a piece. Only 'one extra base hit was rapped by the Redmen, that was a dou- Ible by John Black in the first inning of play to drive in the lnl- i tial run. Mike Carr got things started in 'the bottom half of the first with a single. He stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Black's double then sent him scooting home with the first run of the game. The frame ended, end-ed, however, with the Wildcats coming up with a double play throwing Dave Jensen out at first and catching Black at third when he attempted to advance on the tluow. ! Neither team scored in the second se-cond and the Keumen added a little inure pressure in the third. In the fifth frame Richfield gave their biggest threat coming up with three hits, including a lead-off triple, but failed to score. Siebert, the Wildcat right fielder, tripled to lead off, but was caught attempting to score on a squeeze play when the Redmen came up with a pitehout to avoid the bunt. Siebert was caught cold at the plate for the first out, and although two hits were collected behind him in the frame, they produced no scores. That took the life out of the Wildcats and the Redmen came back in the sixth to put the game away with four runs on three hits. Black walked and moved to second on a single by David Jen sen. Mike Petty attempted a bunt and the Richfield pitcher. Roundy, thiew wild at third on the play allowing Black to come on to score, and Jensen ended up on third and Petty on second. D-nid Myers promptly singled to score Jensen and left runners on first and third. On a delayed steal Meyers moved to second purposely drawing a throw to get in a run down and Petty then attempted at-tempted to score. The throw to the plate was dropped and Petty was in with the third tally and Meyers wound up on third. A single by Bruce Holmes scored Meyers for the final tally of the game. Esplin In posting the victory came up with 10 strikeouts and gave up two walks. Roundy. who suffered the loss, had seven to his credit and also gave up two walks. The Redmen left four men on base with Richfield sliandiBg six during the seven inning contest. con-test.
