Show Four Iron and Lincoln County Farmer Representatives Win Conservation Trip Four Farm representatives from Iron County and Lincoln County, Nev. left Tuesday of this week for Arizona to claim their rcvird for uuia lauding work in the field of soil conservation. The four farmers and their wives Included Craig Clark of Beryl, Elmer O. Gurr from Paro-wan Paro-wan and Kenneth D. Lee and Lester C. Mathews of Panaca, Nev. They boarded a Bonanza flight to Phoenix, Ariz, at noon Tuesday where they will be guests of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for four days on the company's 14,000 acre desert farm near Phoenix. The combined vacation and study trip resulted from naming the men as grand award winners in the company's annual soil conservation competition in their respective soil conservation districts. dis-tricts. During their Arizona visit through Saturday, the four will study the operation of a desert farm based oi irrigation. The farm was established In 1916 as a source of premium cotton for tire cord ,and continues to produce pro-duce cotton as a major crop today to-day in spite of synthetic fibers taking over the tire industry. The farm today is geared to a general operation with grain crops, citrus groves, carrots, lettuce let-tuce and sugar beets all under cultivation. Huge crops of sor-tire sor-tire cord, and continues to produced pro-duced in crop rotation practices support the pen feeding of 5,000 head of cattle finishing out for the market. The desert operation is nourished nour-ished by water from 70 wells drilled to depths as great as 1,700 ft. Nearly two million gallons of water are pumped hourly to maintain the crops under the desert de-sert sun. The soil conservation champions champ-ions also will have time to enjoy the facilities of the Wigwam, a Goodyear-owned winter resort adjoining the farm, where they will be the company's guests. Golf, swimming, horseback riding rid-ing and many other recreational facilities will be theirs for their stay at the farm. |
