Show Reserve Program To Effect Nation's Youth Youths between the ages of 17 to 18'2 can now receive draft deferments with only six months of active duty under a new plan adopted by congress in an attempt at-tempt to build up a ready reserve. Under this new plan which got into operation' on the first of Sept. men in this age group may enlist for the six months active duty and then in the ready reserve re-serve for 1xk years. This means that they would have to complete 48 two-hour drills each year' plus a 15-day encampment with the particular branch of service that they enlist en-list with. For instance anyone, in Iron County, fitting the age requirements require-ments could enlist for six months, come out of the Army and loin the Utah National Guard which has the 213th headquarters' here in Cedar City. They would then attend Guard drills, hold down a regular job in the community and take time out each year for the 15 day encampment at Camp WUliams In northern Utah. Six-Year Plan The new plan, however, has one other type of enlistment that Is for a six-year period rather than an eight as previously mentioned. men-tioned. Under this type of enlistment, enlist-ment, two years would be spent on active duty, three more In the Ready Reserve and one year in the Standby Reserve. No drills or encampments are required In the standby reserve, it was pointed out. A third plan has also been Initiated In-itiated for men with prior service who are released between August 9 of this year and July 1, 1957. They may enlist In a Ready Re- serve unit for one year, then transfer to the Standby Reserve until their total service reaches eight years. The purpose of this new program pro-gram Is to reduce the number of men on Active Duty but build up the Ready Reserve. A contemplated contemplat-ed figure for the Ready Reserve has been set at 1,692,000. Participating Partic-ipating In the Ready Reserve, it was pointed out, enabjes young men to build seniority and rank before entering their period of Active Duty, Instead of going in without prior service. |
