Show SLOW START Cedar Redmen Emerge Yith First Win Surviving a rather rugged first quarter of play the Cedar High School Redmen football team came from behind twice in the team's first game last night to start the season with a victory. The green Redmen team tang, led with a very promising team from Lincoln high schooj at Pan-aca, Pan-aca, Nev., Wednesday evening on the CSU field, and turned in a 20 to 13 victory. During that openfng quarter things looked bad for Coach Glen Jackson's Redmen, but Jackson's players learned fast and as soon as they got their bearings the tide of battle turned and as the game wore on the Redmen dominated dom-inated play. Taking the ball on the opening kick-off the visitors marched down the field for the first score of the game without relinquishing relinquish-ing the ball, and a drop-kick for the extra point put Cedar behind be-hind 7 to 0. Gaining possession on the kick-off after the touchdown touch-down the Redmen showed little on offense, gaining only about five yards on their first series of downs. Panaca started another march and it looked like another an-other score would be a certainty, but the Cedar team s'tarted to click and stopped the drive inside in-side the 15 yard line. The Red-men Red-men continued to have bad luck, however, with two fumbles, two intercepted passes and a 15 yard penalty keeping them back on their heels. On the opening play of the second quarter A. D. Findlay, Cedar Ce-dar quarterback, took a punt on the Cedar 15 yard line, broke through the Panaca defense and went all the way for the first Cedar score. A pass on the try for point failed, however, and Cedar remained one point behind. From this time on the tide began to turn, although Panaca came back to add another touchdown on a beautiful forward pass play before be-fore the half ended. Beginning a determined drive in the early part of the third period per-iod the Redmen marched to the goal line with Dayne Gardner crashing over tackle for the score. Another pass failed on the point after try and Cedar was still on the short end of a 13 to 12 score. Another drive early in the final quarter was stopped on the Panaca Pa-naca three-inch Jlne, but the Redmen were on the march and victory began to Jook not only possible but probable. With the Nevadans taking possession right on the goal line, they made three attempts to run the ball out and each time were barely able to avert being smothered in the end zone for a safety. On the fourth down a high pass from cen-ter cen-ter forced the kicker out of the zone to give Cedar two points and a 14 to 13 lead, enough to win the game. Moments later the Redmen crossed the goal again with Gordon Gor-don Slack making a sensationa.1 catch of Reed Heywood's pass. The game was an interesting early season encounter, and while Coach Jackson's players have much to learn, they showed lots of promise and should develop de-velop rapidly as the season progresses. pro-gresses. Next Friday the Redmen will play their first league game, meeting the Milford Tigers at Mi.' ford. |
