Show Coach Osborne Remains Optimistic About Chances for Grid Victories The College of Southern Utah Broncos open up the grid season Saturday night at the Bronco Bowl against one of the top Junior College teams in the nation, Phoenix Junior College of Arizona. Already Coach Bruce Osborne has been plagued with injuries. Steve Rozelle, a promising end, suffered a shoulder dislocation early this week and will be out for three weeks at least, Osborne said. Vernille Matheson, a former star at Cedar High School is in the Iron County hospital under observation observa-tion for possible indications of polio and Jess Hollerman, a let. terman from last year, has been plagued with a knee injury that will probably put him on the bench, for the remainder of the season. Remains Optimistic However, Coach Osborne is very optimistic and is enthused about his prospects for the coming season. sea-son. Fans' can make their own decisions Saturday night but here are a few of the reasons why he Is stUl hopeful for an outstanding out-standing season: First, he has three stalwarts on the line that are over the 200 pound marker, and that isn't all they can produce pro-duce holes on offense and plug them on defense. They are La-Mar La-Mar Clark, center, weighing in at 205 pounds; Ted Atherley at tackle at 205, and Kenneth Benson Ben-son at guard and down to 275 pounds. The quarterback position, one that was worrying the coach at the start of the season, seems to be in good hands with two young players taking over. Bob Vest of Delta is working smoothly at that position as is Lee Carpenter of Cedar City. Osborne has not decided yet which will get the starting caU Saturday evening. New End A young lad from Bountiful is working nicely at end this year. He is Gene Secrist, a three-letter man is high school. Although Bruce has Jost Rozelle for the time being Ross Marshall, a letterman from last year at tackle, has been moved to that spot and is filling in well. Bill Meador at left half and Jimmy Kielson at right half will probably open up Saturday and Osborne again is optomistic in this department. Meador is in fine shape, Osborne Indicates, and is running much better this year than in the 1954 season. Nielson, also a letterman, is hitting hit-ting hard and can block with the host of them, the coach said. Norris "Shorty" Haggerton will continue as the number one man at the fallback position and fans will remember his fine work from last year. He should be better this season. Tackle Starter eLo Prestwich, also a letterman, will probably start at tackle opposite op-posite Ted Atherley. A competitor competi-tor all the way Prestwich does his best work when the going gets tough. Byron or Don L. Rasmussen wlU start at guard opposite Benson depending on whether the Broncos get the offensive of-fensive or defensiv for th opening open-ing kick. Coach Osborne and his Bronco squad don't open ICAC play until un-til October 1 when they meet Dixie on the local turf. Followirg the Thoenix game the Broncos move to northern Utah for a con-tots con-tots with a Dugway Proving Grounds team on Friday, September Sep-tember 24. Season tickets have been placed plac-ed on sale and civic clubs of the community are handling them for the athletic department. Four home games can be seen for the price of $3.50 and fans are encouraged en-couraged to take advantage of the price and the convenience by purchasing the season dockets. |
