Show Power Franchise Question Has Political Ties No decision has yet been made on when the Southern Utah Power Pow-er company franchise question will be brought before the voters of Cedar City as the result of the request for a referendum vote on the issue. The state Supreme Court has ordered the city to present the issue to the voters, which will be done this fall. It has been assumed that the Issue would be voted on at the regular municipal election in November. No-vember. Apparently, however, this is not necessary. Some poo-pie poo-pie favor bringing the power issue is-sue to a vote betore the municipal munici-pal election in order that the question might be decided solely sole-ly on the merits of the case, and not become involved in politics. If the election is held with the municipal election it undoubtedly un-doubtedly will become the ma jor political issue of the election. Jt would be expected that the Democratic party candidate would be an opponent of the power franchise since most of the signers and sponsors of the referendum petition are leaders in the Democratic party. It would be natural to expect that the Republican candidate would be a proponent of the franchise fran-chise since the franchise in question was approved under a Republican administration. It can be expected that if the issue is decided at the municipal election, elec-tion, the voting for candidates, particularly mavor, would be on a power basis rather than on party lines. Mayor L. V. Broadbent has again indicated that he definitely defin-itely will not be a candidate for re-election, and there has been very little to indicate who the Republican party will select as a candidate to succeed him in that position. Nor is there any definite def-inite indication who the Democratic Demo-cratic candidate meight be. Sometime before the referendum referen-dum vote, no matter when it may be, the city must publish detailed de-tailed arguments for and against issuing of the franchise, and mail a copy to each registered voter in the city. There has been no indication as yet, however, when work on this will be started. |
