' ' i i By JUDY JENSEN Editor i July 4th, Independence Day, is a day when Americans reflect on the j birth of their country. Independence is a word which has a variety of j meanings. When the representatives from the states met in 1787 in ( : Philidelphia to draft what was to become the Constitution of the United States, George Washington told the group "Let us raise a standard stan-dard to which the wise and honest can repair. The event is in the hand ofGod." Since that time independence has been a valued state for Americans. We asked local residents to respond to the question, "What is independence in-dependence to you?" To Cindi Davis, independence is "living in a free country where we can do anything. The freedom of ) speech is important to me. We have i the right to say anything we want ' ' "I would say independence is the r freedom for all individuals," said Russ Sorensen. "The freedom for rights, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." According to Janet Davis, independence in-dependence is "The freedom to live how we choose, shop where we want, and go to church where we choose." "And," added the reluctant reluc-tant interviewee laughingly, "say 'no to the press." Janet said she enjoys the right to raise her family the way that she chooses, "With no one to tell us what's right or wrong." "The freedom to move about and think as we wish," is how Don Roberts defined independence. ' 'Also the freedom to achieve as we wish," he added. To Penny Milne, independence is the "freedom to speak our minds. To live here in this country, and" she said referring to recent controversy con-troversy surrounding flag burning, "to display our country's flag." tit n JANET DAVIS ' 'Freedom to go to church. ' ' "Being able to do what you want to do, and not having others telling you what to do and not to do," is independence to Brian Beck. Of all of the freedoms the Constitution guarantees, Brian said he would fight hardest to preserve the "right to bear arms." |
