Show Best times to hike Escalante Summer -Fall should you become lost or injured. Firewood is usually available, but a backpacking stove should be carried. Quality of stream and spring water has not been determined; therefore, all water should be treated. Burn all burnable trash and pack out unburnable trash. Do not bury trash for animals to dig up. Dig latrines at least one foot deep, and at least 100 feet from the river. Federal law prohibits destroying or defacing Indian In-dian artifacts. The best times to hike the Escalante River are late March through June and mid-September through October. Weather conditions con-ditions and water temperatures tem-peratures are most favorable during these periods. Temperatures range from 60 degrees on Spring days to 90 degrees on Summer days and 30 degrees on Spring nights to 60 degrees on Summer nights. It is impossible to predict weather conditions in the Escalante River area very far in advance. If current information about river conditions is desired, call either the Escalante Area Office one-fourth one-fourth mile west of the Town of Escalante (801-826-4291) or the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, P.O. Box 1507, Escalante, Utah 84726 (801-816-4315). Most of the river is slow and shallow, with depths ranging from ankle to knee deep. Some deep water occurs at the lower end, especially in the Narrows above Coyote Gulch. Normally Nor-mally there is not enough water for canoes or rafts. The river must be crossed many times, so canvas shoes or boots are suggested. Good camp sites are common. Please build fires in previously used locations whenever possible and use only dead, downed wood. Springs are fairly common, but all drinking and dish water should be sterilized. ACCESS Roads and trailheads are shown on the map. Roads are usually passable by passenger car, except during and immediately after severe storms. Please restrict vehicle travel to existing roads. Vehicle travel down Harris Wash and Silver Fall Canyon is prohibited within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Coyote Gulch, Hurricane Wash, the Escalante River, Deer Creek, and the Gulch are closed to motor vehicles. REQUIREMENTS Permits are not required except for commercial trips and organized groups (scout troops, schools, clubs, etc.) However, permits for all hikers may be required in the future. Until then , as a safety precaution, it is recommended that you register at the BLM office in Escalante or at trailheads. Registration will supply the BLM with the date you expect to come out of the canyon, alerting them for search and rescue efforts |
