Show Gary "Tex" Cowart Jeff Dumont Pair named to District team A pair of Southern Utah State College baseball players have been named to the All-NAIA District Seven baseball team, but the season is over for both of them, as well as the rest of the Thunderbird squad. SUSC was eliminated from further post-season play last week in the District Seven playoffs. Second baseman Jeff DuMont, a junior from Albany, Oregon, and designated hitter Gary "Tex" Cowart. a junior from Spanish Fork, were named to the all-district team following , the playoffs. Cowart and DuMont rank one-two in batting averages on the team. Cowart, who also leads the squad in slugging percentage, finished the year with a .370 average. DuMont had a .344 batting bat-ting average. DuMont was high on the team in total at-bats, hits, and total bases. Cowart led the squad in home runs (8) and runs batted in; dubiously, he shared the lead in strikeouts. DuMont was a key in the strong defensive play of the Thunderbirds this year. Other members of the all-district team included three players from Mesa College and five players each from Denver University and district champion Grand Canyon College. SUSC finished its season with a 16-18 record against probably its toughest competition ever. The Thunderbirds captured the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship cham-pionship by winning four straight games; they also eliminated top seeded Denver University from the district playoffs before being bumped by Mesa, a team they have defeated five times in six previous meetings. "We've had a good year," Don Conrad, SUSC coach says. "In fact you could say we've had a great season, considering the type of people we have faced and the adjustments ad-justments we have had to make." Conrad took over the team from Hack Mitchell after the first six games of the season. Mitchell resigned as coach for personal reasons. SUSC plans to hire a new coach for next season; Conrad, who was appointed on an interim basis, will continue his regular duties as( an assistant football coach. "There is plenty of talent scheduled back for next season; I look for another strong team," Conrad indicates. |
