Show Athlete of the week And you thought that horseraces in Parowan are only held in the fall? Not so! A couple of Parowan High School athletes have been running the "horserace" "hor-serace" as it is affectionately, af-fectionately, or maybe frighteningly called by high school tracksters. Their training has payed off. Scott Freeborn and Misti Bentley have sprinted the gut-wrenching gut-wrenching 400-meter run often enough, and fast enough, to bring Parowan ' two state crowns in the boys and girls quarter-mile. quarter-mile. To top it off, both established new state records while winning the "horserace" at Saturday's Satur-day's state 1-A track meet in Cedar City. Freeborn clocked a 52.15 to eclipse the old state mark of 52.49. He ran a heady race to beat highly touted Jess Cox of Beaver by one-half second. The Ram speedster placed second at the region meet held the previous week and some wondered if he had peaked too early. Apparently Ap-parently not. Freeborn also placed second in the pole-vault and fifth in the high hurdles in the state meet. Bentley won the quarter with a 1:02 time which was nearly a second better than her old state record. However, she turned-in a 1:01.5 in the trials to smash her own previous state record by 1.4 seconds. A third place finish in the shot, along with running the anchor-leg of the state winning 1600-meter 1600-meter relay team rounded off a very successful suc-cessful day for the Ram junior. For their efforts, the dynamic duo will be receiving certificates from the Iron County Record. |
