Jon Rex contributed to Parowan's success as he took second in the 200-meter 200-meter dash and fifth in the 100-meter sprint. Rex ran a 23.50 200-meters and a 11.88 100. A medley relay foursome clocked a 4:07.88 to place third, behind Beaver and North Sevier. In addition to Freeborn's second place finish in the pole-vault, Parowan did fairly well in the field events. Doug Rogerson jumped 5-10 in the high-jump to place fourth. Dan Rex went 5-8 to nab a sixth. Both jumps were well below season bests for the two. Mike Jones tossed the shot 42-l:l4 to take home a fifth place ribbon. By MIKE C ANNON Record Reporter It's been said that placing second is like kissing your sister. Don't you believe it! The Parowan Ram boys track team experienced the satisfaction of coming from behind to place second in Saturday's state 1-A track meet held at the SUSC track in Cedar City. Parowan edged Region 12 rival Kanab by two points to take home a nice-sized second place trophy while Kanab went home with a pat on the back. Prior to the meet, nobody argued that Beaver was the team to beat. The Beavers were true to their billing and ran up 82 points to capture championship cham-pionship honors. Parowan followed with 66 1 a, then came Kanab with 64V2. The rest of the 18-team field was way back. Kanab had beaten the Rams the previous week in Region 12 competition; com-petition; thus, nipping them at the wire had to be satisfying. The final two events provided the excitement. Lloyd Baker ran a strong nice in the 3200 and barely inched-out Kldon Siewiyumptewa, Wasatch Academy lor second place. The two point difference between second and third matched the two point margin over Kanab. Baker ran a 10:35.33 and Siewiyumptewa a 10:35.92. Not so close for a 100-meter dash, but for a 3200-meter 3200-meter run, wow! A Ram 1600-meter relay team took second in the day's final event to nail down the second-place team finish. Kain, wind and even snow made the day less than desirable for track. However, several outstanding efforts were still turned in. Scott Freeborn blazed the quarter in 52.15 to set a new state mark. Freeborn ran a very smart race, laying back for the first 220 and then turning it on down the back stretch and final 150 meters to beat Beaver's Jess Cox. Cox ran a 52.73. Freeborn also improved on a poor pole-vault performance in the previous week's region meet. He vaulted 12-0 |
