Show Fiddler's Canyon school Board accepts building bid A bid opening for construction of the Fiddler's Canyon Elementary School highlighted the Iron County School District Board of Education meeting on Tuesday. Bids on the proposed complex were submitted by seven companies, and the bidding was extremely close. Construction' Con-struction' was awarded to Carter Brother's Construction Co. of Cedar City. Carter Brother's turned in a bid totaling $2,961,300. Each of the bidders submitted a base bid plus two alternative alter-native bids on a sprinkler system and sight paving. The Board used a total iigure when evaluating bids. Bidders also stated in their bid package the time that would be required lo complete the project. Don Munk Co. of Richfield actually sub-milted sub-milted a low hid at $2,920,200 total, hovcwT their designated duration of construction was MHi calendar days, compared t to 400 lor Carter Brothers. The project was awarded to the local I inn lor that reason. other competing bids included Roderick and Howell Construction out oi Orem at $2,967,900; (lower Construction Con-struction of Cedar City at $3,020,000; MOM Construction. Salt Lake City at S3.029.00ti; I'tah System Builders from Salt Lake with a bid of $3,265,533 and Hall Brothers, Hurricane with a figure of $3.31 l.OWi. Construction on the facility is scheduled to begin shortly.' In other action Tuesday, the Board granted approval for lees to be charged to students in grades 9 through 12 in Iron County who are involved in various extracurricular activities. Several factors mandated that the lee. similar to what some northern schools have adopted, be levied on local students. The fee is being assessed tor the sole purpose o of eliminating the deficit budget at Cedar High School, i unviiih, a SlH.31ti.39 deficit exists. A dencit of around $25,000 existed nolore Venule Matheson took the reins .s principal ol the school. District Nipcnntendant J. Clair Morris com-inended com-inended Matheson lor his efforts to correct the financial problem and told hoard members that it would take 10 ears lor the school to break-even at the current rate of progress. A $5 to $15 lee for involvement in most athletic and other extracurricular activities will be assessed to Cedar and Parowan High School students. Also a $10 lee will be charged to behind-the-wheel driver training students. Board members felt that Parowan students should also pay the fees as the District has, in the past, subsidized a larger portion of their programs than they have at Cedar High. Revenue from the surcharge will be over $6,000 annually and will enable Cedar High School to eliminate their deficit within three years. In other matters -O.Kent Hulet told board members that Iron County students averaged significantly higher than the national average in California Achievement Test scores. Tests cover math, reading and language. Local students fared especially well in reading and math. Dee W ilk en was approved as I nrector of Construction of the district. Uilken will begin functioning this summer and will oversee construction w ork done lor the Iron County District. -Board members reviewed a tentative ten-tative budget for the 1981-82 year. A budget hearing, open to all interested individuals, will be held Tuesday, June 30 a at 5 p.m. |
