Show 'Birds ' best honored Football player Dave Mollica and gymnast-runner gymnast-runner Mary Damiani were named Southern Utah State College athletes of the year Tuesday night at the college's annual athletic awards banquet. Mollica, who just last week signed a free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League, led the Thunderbirds to a 6-3 record last fall as the team s quarterback. He finished the season as the NAIA's 11th leading passer with an average of 180 yards per game. He ranked second nationally in total offense by gaining 223.6 yards per game by rushing and passing on an average day. He is a senior from Costa Mesa, Calif. Damiani, a senior from Chicago Heights, 111., lettered in both gymnastics gym-nastics and track for the Thunderbirds. She will be competing this weekend in the NAIA National Championships in both the 800 meters and the 1500 meters. Damiani is the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion in both the 800 and 1500. She has run the NAIA's fourth fastest 1500 this year, and her best in the 800 is the eighth fastest in the nation among NAIA schools. Athletes of the year in the various sports were also honored at the banquet. The Iron County "Record Road Run" will be held Monday at 8 a.m. The five mile course will begin in front of the Record office at 59 north 100 West. Registration for the run will be at 7:30 a.m. on Monday at the starting line. |
