Show Opera to air "Boris Gudunov," Mussorgsky's moving study of the 17th-century Russian tsar, is the fifth and final broadcast of this season's Beatrice Foods-Lyric Opera of Chicago series. The opera will be broadcast at noon Saturday over KGSU-FM, KGSU-FM, the Southern Utah State College radio station. The Lyric production features the Bulgarian bass-baritone Nicolai Ghiaurov in the title role. Bruno Bartoletti con- ducts the performance. Ghiaurov is joined in the Lyric production by tenor Wieslaw Ochman as Demitri; mezzo-soprano mezzo-soprano Ruza Baldani as Marina, the Polish princess with whom Demitri falls in love; and bass Hans Sotin as the righteous old monk Pimen. "Boris Godunov" was presented at Lyric in a production that featured Mussorgsky's original orchestration. This opera has one of the most checkered careers of any of them, partly because of Mussorgsky's own reworkings of his original ideas and partly because of Rimsky-Korsakov's extensive revisions and reorchestration. KGSU-FM has broadcast the entire 20-part 20-part Texaco Metropolitan Opera Series as well as the shorter Lyric Opera series as part of its classical programming. |
