This became the town of Parowan, the county seat of Iron County in the Heartland of what is now known as Utah's Color Country. Attracted by the pleasant valley set against a rugged mountain background, those early pioneers found qualities that still make Parowan an enjoyable place to visit and an even better place to live. Adjacent to some of southwestern south-western Utah's most famous recreation areas, Parowan is just a short drive from Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Lake Powell, Cedar Breaks National Monument and Brian Head summer and winter resort. But the summer need not be spent entirely in the mountains. You can take a stroll down main street and view the historic Rock Church, or enjoy an afternoon af-ternoon visiting with townspeople. The annual Labor Day County Fair takes place in Parowan with horse races and rodeo and other country-style entertainment. en-tertainment. Other regular cultural events include yearly tours by Utah Symphony and Ballet West. Parowan has escaped the major problems of big city life yet still offers recreational and cultural opportunities. The area attracts vacationers because of its prime location. It is located on the main arteries between Salt Lake City and Southern California. It is just 18 miles from Cedar City. It is served by a City Airport with a 5,000 foot lighted runway. Regular commuter service is available with connections north and south. Parowan is a Piute Indian word meaning "evil water". Legend tells of an Indian girl caught in the river long ago and swept into the little salt lake at the north end of the alley. Parowan is one of the highest cities in Utah, being more than a mile above sea |
