Show Athlete of the week ' , ! St What is 6'3" tall, weighs 237 lbs. and has a distinct greenish tint, especially at track-meets? track-meets? A grass-stained Joe Wells. The hulkish-like field specialist of the Southern Utah State College Track Team has been selected as the Record's top thlete for the week of pril 12-18. Wells earned the honor through an outstanding individual performance at the Color Country Invitational track meet, held Saturday in Cedar City. Eight schools participated par-ticipated in the men's division of the meet, ncluding perennial Big 3ky powers Weber State and Northern Arizona University. The University of Nevada-Las Vegas and University of Utah were also present, making the competition extremely tough. Despite the formidable opposition, Wells captured cap-tured a first and two second place finishes n the field events. A toss of 51-10 in the shotput garnered a victory while establishing a new Thunderbird Stadium record. Wells also threw the discus 138-10, good enough for second place. In the javelin, an event in which the big senior hasn't participated since his freshman year, Wells placed second with a heave of 189-3. He finished only behind SUSC's outstanding chucker, Robert Shirts. The SU strongman has been impressive throughout the 1981 season. He has been improving in recent weeks and should be very tough to beat at the RMAC meet coming up in May. Joe Wells I |
