Show Lady striders face tough test Possibly the toughest competition of the year awaits the Southern Utah State College women's track team Saturday when the Thunderbirds compete in the Potato Classic at Pocatello, Idaho "This will be a real toughie for us," SUSC Coach Ben Davidson says. "I don't look for us to pick up a lot of points, but I do look for plenty of continued individual improvement." Idaho State University will host the multi-team meet. Other teams expected ex-pected include Weber State, Utah, Utah State, Boise State, Montana, Montana State, and Western Montana. Probable team favorites are host ISU and USU, which captured first last week in the SUSC-hosted Color Country Invitational. Boise State, while something of an unknown, traditionally has strong women's.track squads. "We'll just go up and do the best that we can," Davidson says. "We don't know anything about the Montana Schools, but we do know that some of the others have strong teams." Davidson figures that the competition will help hone his team for the upcoming Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference meet May 9 at Gunnison, Colorado. "Good competition will help us prepare for the best performances in the conference meet," he says. Last week, the Thunderbird Thun-derbird women finished sixth among seven teams in the Color Country Invitational, but individual in-dividual performances were generally better than in previous meets. Ten members " of Davidson's squad had their best marks of the season. Five new SUSC records were set in the meet. Lisa Bouwhuis (freshman, Ogden) established a new mark in the javelin with a toss of 117-9. Chris Whetton (junior, North Salt Lake) pushed her own long jump record out to 17-10. Mechele Hebberd (Freshman, Riverton) set the high jump record at 5-2. Other new school records were set by Janet Jorgensen (freshman, Sigurd) in the 100 meter hurdles, 16.32, and Rachel Southwick (sophomore, Bountiful) in the 400 meters, 1:08.79. Mary Damiani ran a 2:16.80 in the 800 meters to qualify for the national NAIA meet. |
