Wfr-.,.-.v.-.v.-A--v.i!..-.y.i. , By MIKE CANNON Record Reporter The old addage, "The - sum of the parts is greater than the whole" certainly is true with regards to the Southern Utah State College track team. The 'Birds' finished a mediocre fourth in their I own Color Country In-I In-I vitational meet held i Saturday at Thunderbird Stadium. Lack of team depth prohibited a higher finish by SU, and competition com-petition from the likes of Weber State, Nortnern Arizona and the University of Utah didn't help matters. From an individual point of view SUSC was outstanding. Numerous personal bests, along with several school and stadium records were recorded at the meet. Record-breaking performances began in the long jump, where Adrian Sampson uncoiled a leap of 24-4, shattering shat-tering the old stadium mark by 8 inches. The Southern Utah freshman improved on hes best this season by 18 inches with the record setting effort. Big Joe Wells heaved the shot 51-10 for a first place finish and a new school mark. The field specialist had himself an outstanding day, capturing cap-turing second's in the discus and javelin(see Athlete of Week). Robert Shirts nearly shish ke-babbed several distant spectators as he unleashed a throw of 237 feet in a preliminary javelin round. The toss broke the old school record by over two feet and qualified him for the NAIA national championships. cham-pionships. Pole Vaulter Bruce Bryan cleared 16 feet to capture the victory in that event. He out-vaulted out-vaulted his competiton by six inches and was still a foot below his personal best. Mary Damiani won the women's 800 meters as she held off a hard-charging hard-charging Gwen White from Utah State. Damiani out-gutted the Utah State challenger in the final meters to clock the 2: 16.80 win. The quick time qualified Damiani for the NAIA natonal meet in the 800. She has already qualified in the 1500 meters. Several other school marks fell on Saturday. Catch me if you can! Kris Glover ran a 14.51 in the 110 high hurdles to establish a new record and finish fourth. Kevin Millecam and Marvin Bagley also ran persona), bests in the event, with Millecam capturing sixth. Millecam also recorded a personal best in the 400 intermediate hurdles. Southern Utah's 1600 meter relay team of Millecam, Russ Eyre, Derek Lamb and Randy Palmer finished third in the relay and shattered their own school record by over six seconds, turning in a time of 3:31.78 Other thunderbirds contributed to the team total of 85 points. Bruce Bryan captured a fourth in the javelin. Ernie Pena finished the same in the shotput. Pena also grabbed a fifth in the discus. Premier distance runner Keenan Hart suffered .. a disappointing disap-pointing day as he finished fourth in the 1500. Hart scratched from the 5000, his best event, due to sickness. Aaron Sampson placed fourth in the long jump and tied for sixth with Southern Utah's Scott Henderson in the high jump. Thunderbird tracksters are getting geared-up for the RMAC meet in May.
