Show Outbreak imminent9 Utah is expected to experience a destructive outbreak of Black Grass Bugs that destroy many grasses on ranges, and a serious outbreak is alread imminent in Iron County, according to G. Austin Haws, professor of biology and entomology at Utah State University. Visiting Iron County last week, he found i populations of over 100 per square foot and ex- tensive damage on new plants on the ranges. He is urging cattlemen and range managers to begin control measures before the insects do further damage and before they inject their eggs in the stems of the grass to create the same problem for another year. He recommends eight ounces of ultra low volume malathion per acre applied with helicopter or by use of an emulsifiable concentrate with ground equipment on flatter range. Check weather forecast for , prospects when temperatures should rise above 60 degrees to activate ac-tivate the malathion and apply at early in the morning when the air is calm, concluded Haws. |
