Show SPORTS FLASHBACKS Uintah topples Altamont hoopsters A basketball story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Jan. 19, 1956. UTE "B" TEAM NUDGES ALTAMONT IN EXCITING PRELLMINARY GAME The sophomore preliminary game Friday was a much closer combat than the main event and drew a lot of excitement from earlier visitors. After a hard battle the Utes won a narrow victory with a 48-42 final score. This is the "B" team's eighth straight victory this season under Coach Leo Conk. The Uintah varsity team blasted Altamont, 67-45. The young braves drew first blood with Workman, Goodrich and Hadlock scoring before the Longhorns got started. They made one count then Workman and Hadlock scored again. Hanson scored for Altamont then Lee and Workman scored and the score was 14-14 at the end of the first quarter. Goodrich fouled in the second quarter and Hanson made two for two. Hanson fouled and the score wound up 6-1. At this point Altamont made a terrific rally and scoring in rapid succession for the Longhorns were Tew, Beckstead, twice, Reay twice and Denver to put Altamont in the lead 18-16. 18-16. Hadlock evened the score for Uintah, Gardiner scored and the Utes led again 20-18 at the end of the second period. During the third quarter the teams scored alternately and gave fans on both sides of the fence a lot of excitement. Workman increased the lead to 22-18. Walker and Tew evened it. The Longhorns led by a free throw. Gardiner evened it the same way. ' Workman fouled and Beckstead put Altamont ahead two on free throws. Lee evened the score for the Utes. Gardiner scored then fouled and the Longhorns evened it on free throws 27 all. Workman scored then Seymore and the Utes led by 31-27 at the end of the third quarter. Seymore fouled at the beginning of the fourth and Beckstead took advantage of it for two points. Workman scored and Goodrich made a long shot count IfOr 36-29. Beckstead took advantage of it for two points. Workman scored and Goodrich made along shot count for 36-29. Beckstead scored for Altamont, Seymore for Uintah and Tew for Altamont. Gardiner threaded the hoop for Uintah and the tally was 39-33. Longhorn Hanson was taken out with five personals. Beckstead scored and Iorg and Workman fouled. Hadlock scored two and the score wound up 43- 36. Hadlock fouled and keen-eyed Iorg made the two throws count. Miller fouled and Goodrich made one throw count. Workman and Goodrich scored. Iorg and Denver scored for Altamont , and the final tally read 48-42 in favor of the Utes. High scorers for Uintah were Workman 14 and Hadlock 11. Another basketball story follows as it was printed in the VernalExpress on Jan. 19, 1956. The Maeseij First junior basketball team remains undefeated as the league season draws to a close. Just two weeks remain in the regular schedule. Maeser 1st defeated Davis to keep a perfect record as far as league play is concerned. The Davis crew was determined but lacked the experience and ball handling that the Maeser boys have. Larid Johnson led his teammates with 17 points as they scored 53 points while Davis scored 32. Glines had an easy time defeating Maeser 2nd with a 29 to 12 victory. Glines' Gary Case scored almost at will as he racked up 18 points. It seemed that Maeser 2nd just couldn't score at all which is rather unusual. They had many opportunities to score but couldn't do it. In another encounter last week Davis put up a good fight against a faster and more experienced Naples team. Bill Walker of Naples scored 13 of his team's 27 points for high point honors. Davis collected 16 points in that game. In a very close and exciting game, Vernal Fourth edged past Tridell to chalk up a 24-19 victory. Both teams fought hard and were evenly matched all the way through the game. Vernal Fourth led all the way but not more than five points at any time in the "game. The exciting game of the week took place with Jensen opposing Vernal 2nd Ward. At any time in the game the score didn't vary two points and at the final whistle the score was tied up at 29 all. In the overtime period a foul was called against Vernal Fourth and Sonny Becham made one foul pitch which made the score 30-29 and a few seconds later the game ended with no more additions to the score. The fans that witnessed the game were well pleased with the way both teams played the game. It was an encounter to remember and will be talked about for some time to come. The final game of the week pitted Lapoint against a smaller Glines team. Lapoint dominated the floor from the beginning and didn't give the Glines boys much opportunity to score. Final score was Lapoint 42, Glines 13. High scoring individual was Keith Horrocks .from Lapoint at 20 points. MAESER FIRST LEADS JUNIOR BASKETBALL AT WINDUP Last Friday night the basketball league in the junior division was completed. The league has been very successful with twelve teams participating. Maeser First finished up very strong at 11 wins and 0 losses. Maeser 1st downed Tridell in a very one-sided contest for its 11th win. Maeser 1st took an early and commanding lead and added to it throughout the game. Final score was Maeser First, 53 and Tridell, 24. Laird Johnson totaled 17 points in that game. A very exciting game took place between second place Lapoint and Vernal Fifth ward last Friday night. Throughout the game it looked like Lapoint would be upset. Vernal Fifth led in scoring until the closing seconds of the game when Lapoint staged a rally and moved ahead to win by a three point margin. The cheering fans will remember that game for some time. Score: Lapoint 37, Vernal 5th, 34. High scoring honors were shared by Keith Horrocks of Lapoint and Larry Burke of Vernal 5th, each with 13 tallies. Lapoint finished in second place at 10 wins and 1 loss. Jensen trailed Vernal Third until midway in the third period when they began to click and moved out in front to win the game with a 26 to 17 score. Duane Karren racked up a total of 9 points for high point honors. The fans were on their feet with tension and excitement as Glines and Vernal Fourth put on a fine exhibition of ball playing with first one and then the other in the lead. The score didn't vary more than four points at any time in the game. Glines finally eased ahead to win the game 29 to 27. The consistent scoring of Gary Case spelled the difference on the floor. Case collected 18 tallies in that game. Vernal 2nd won by default over Davis. Another very close and exciting game featured Maeser 2nd , Naples trailed by 8 poinfc halfway mark but came back ' " the third and fourth quarters the lead down to two points but to lack the steam to put thA front.
