Show DOT approves sum for new Vernal sidewalks The Utah Transportation Commission Commis-sion Friday approved $30,333.75 for construction con-struction of new sidewalks in Vernal as part of the Safe Sidewalk Program. Two months ago the city applied for funds to put a sidewalk from 300 North and 500 West on the east side to 500 North, Nor-th, said Kay Overson, public works director. 't his area was selected because it is an access for kids traveling to and from a major subdivision, Overson said. The Utah State Legislature appropriated ap-propriated $1 million for fiscal year 1983 for new sidewalk construction along state highways around the state. The projects are for areas that are potentially dangerous to pedestrians. "We don't expect that area to be developed shortly," Overson said about the need for the sidewalks on 500 West. A formula was devised to distribute the money fairly on a county-by-county basis. It takes into consideration population, school enrollment and the number of pedestrian accidents in the county. The local PTA and government officials worked with the Utah Department Depart-ment of Transportation in selecting specific projects. Overson said construction of the sidewalks would possibly begin before 1983, depending on the work load of the city engineer. |
