Show Let's celebrate Pioneer Day Summer's gne. The 24th of July is .Eton's summer sale is over. Snicks, there is nothing to look lif3rd to, but school bells. u let's celebrate the 24th with a and a holler. la my ex-home town of Snowflake, ifjj the 24th of July is not a state y'iiv. bu' ' 's celebrated like is was, ig the 24th is also the day Mormon pioneers purchased the land and arted the Snowflake settlement. psa Oschner thinks Snowflake is a name for a town in Arizona ere some winters it's the only sax-flake around. But Brother Flake Brother Snow, who were sent to tuona to buy the land for pioneer tfjement, probably thought it was a ry clever name. txJI become defensive when anyone jcies fun at my town's name. K's like saving Vernal was not the $riiest spot in Utah when someone sred it for spring. "Them's fightin tcris." laidY never set foot in Roosevelt, but rt; laughs at its name? And Maeser is respected name, although Karl G. Ler, for whom it was named, was ire its outstanding citizen. I haven't seen them, but Tridell irs three dales. And no one jstions Lapoint as "the point." fesen. Glines. Ashley and Davis nr? all named for people who were ice in the area. Appropriate, sturdy . szs. To poke fun at them would be an outrage. And Dutch John (Now that's a funny name) is considered unique. It was named for a German who once settled there. Will someone please tell me why Naples was named Naples and why Manila rates Manila? Because our pioneer forefathers chose to name towns "this and that," our town's name is one of the legacies we celebrate on the 24th of July. Each town celebrates in a different way. When I first adopted Vernal, the big parade and concessions were over early so everyone could evacuate to cooler climes. The Vernal 24th was traditionally a "head for the mountains" day. Ten years ago a new twist was added when Cloyd Harrison, as District Scout Commissioner, came up with the idea of the 24th Scout breakfast. It has been fun to watch this activities' crowd double and triple. Seems every year something new is added. That may be great, but since I have become an old-time Vernalite, as soon as I eat breakfast and watch the parade, I want to escape to the hills. For I'm overcome with an uncontrollable desire to dress in old clothes, pack some grub and rough it. If I had a covered wagon and oxen, I'd use them. Is there a better way to celebrate Pioneer Day? |
