Show In The good Sid Says 30 Years Ago July 24, 1952 A closed fire season for the State of Utah was proclaimed by Chief Forester-Firemanager J. Whitney Floyd beginning June 1 and will continue until Oct. 1, a period when fires are easily ignited because of low humidity, hot days, high dry winds and drying foliage in our forests and range lands. A swim meet was held today (Thursday) at the Vernal swimming pool with prizes being given to the winners by local merchants. Participants were the boys junior class up to 16 years of age, the girls junior class up to 12 years of age, the boys senior class 16 and over and the girls senior class 12 and older. Say, plant bugs are showing up in all . sections of Uintah County, and are extremely heavy in the areas of Jensen, Maeser,. Ballard and Randlett, according to County Agent Clair Acord. These bugs are particularly damaging to all crops and will be found in numerous clusters in grain fields and alfalfa. They suck sap from the plants, and when two or three bugs are found on one head of grain, it is time to start spraying. Recommended control is 3-10 pounds of technical benzene hekachloride per acre in either dust or spray form. The Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company completed the installation of radio equipment early this week which is now being utilized in furnishing telephone service to Carter Oil Company operations, according to M. 0. Boswell, manager. John Strong's Circus, to be held Friday and Saturday, July 25 and 26 in Vernal, will be set up on the west lawn of the City County Park where boys and girls will be entertained by a ten-act show, including Wm. Dedrick's world famous ponys starring Silver from television; Eddie the clown: Nello; Roddy and his pals; trained dogs, and Cheeta, the trained baby monkey. 50 Years Ago July 21, 1932 President Heber J. Grant of Salt Lake City will be the orator of the day at a Pioneer Day celebration to be held at Maeser Monday. President Grant will also speak at special meetings at Roosevelt Saturday night and at Vernal Sunday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. President Grant will be accompanied by a party of 15 who are coming to attend the Maeser celebration. This will be the first time in the history of the Ashley Valley that a president of the LDS church has been the principle speaker at the patriotic celebration. The 175 Scouts who are encamped at Deer Lodge in the Uinta Mountains 31 miles north of Vernal, at the encampment of the Timpanogas Council, were treated to a real thrill Tuesday afternoon. The state fish and game department, through the efforts of the Vernal Gun Club, Monday evening, planted 2200 legal-sized rainbow trout in Francis Creek, a small stream near the camp for the boys to fish out on the following day. At the site of Tuesday, the boys were lined up along the stream, having the time of their lives bringing out the speckled beauties. Alfalfa seed is harvested in the fall but it isn't sold for planting until spring. In the past the seed companies have had good lines of credit on which to pay growers for their seed in the fall and carry it themselves until selling time. The depression has changed the credits of long enough duration to do this thing just about unobtainable. This means low prices and sacrifice sales unless some way is found to get around this difficulty. |
