Show Vernal Pony all-stars snare state tourney title Vernal's 13 year old Pony League all-stars all-stars captured first place in the State Pony League Tournament, Thursday at Springville with an 8-1 win over West Valley City. The Vernal crew thumped Springville, July 12, by the score of 14 to 2 and the winning pitcher was Greg Jaramillo. Vernal nipped West Valley City, 6 to 4, Wednesday, July 14 and Jaramillo was the winning pitcher. The Vernal team was edged by West Valley City, 9 to 7, but thumped West Valley, 8 to 1 in the championship game. Brett Weldon was the winning pitcher in the game for Vernal. Larry Wiseman led off for the Vernal team in the championship game with a double in the top of the first inning. Wiseman scored on a double by David Murphy. A single by Mike Schiller knocked in Murphy with run number two. Jaramillo singled and Weldon flied out. A sacrifice hit by Bart Taylor drove in Schiller with a 3-0 Vernal advantage. Vernal scored one run in the top of the second and four runs in the top of the third inning for an 8-0 advantage. Wiseman singled in the top of the second and stole second base. Murphy singled and Wiseman crossed home plate. Chad Deines was walked in the third inning and Tory Adams singled. Wiseman gained his third hit in the game due to a single and scored Dienes. Adams and Wiseman performed a successful double steal. Murphy pocketed his third hit of the game and drove in Adams and Wiseman. Murphy stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. Murphy scored on a infield out to give his team an 8-0 lead. West Valley scored one run in the fifth inning. Teams that competed in the state tournament were Highland-Holliday, West Valley City, Vernal, Tooele, Granite and Springville. Ted Taylor, one of the coaches on the Vernal team, remarked, "I believe this is the first time a team from Vernal has won a state tournament. The Vernal team played well together and with a lot of heart."
