AAaeser 2nd senioirs wan tlVc championship sbbeaBIgcoiiiel Maeser 3rd was the iiiirlefeaUt crew going into the championship game in a junior tournament in 1979, but the team dropped two games to Vernal 8th. Maeser 3rd's senior team was the undefeated softballers going in the championship game in the Vernal Utah Maeser Stake softball tournament, but they suffered that old deja vu (happened (hap-pened before) feeling as they were nipped by Maeser 2nd, 13 to 12 and 14 to 12, Friday in Vernal. A good number of the Maeser 3rd senior players competed com-peted on the Maeser 3rd junior team in 1979. A 4-0 lead was gained by Maeser 3rd in the first inning in the first championship cham-pionship game. Jim Hhoades gained a single and Gary Dockery nabbed a base hit when the ball hit the third base bag. Rhoades and Dockery crossed home plate for a 2-0 lead and Stewart Parker , singled. Benny Keel got on base on a fielder's choice and Parker scored Maeser 3rd's third run. A double by Kenny Stewart drove in Keel and gave Maeser 3rd a 4-0 lead. Maeser 3rd acquired a 5-0 lead when Hhoades singled and scored a run in the top of the second inning. Maeser 2nd erased its zero with one run in the bottom of the second inning. Kevin Allen singled and scored on a double by Dwayne Merrell, which cut Maeser 3rd's lead to 5 to 1 . Maeser 2nd tied up the game at 5-5 with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Craig Massey and Jeff McClellan smashed singles. Chuck Henry gained a base hit. which drove in Massey and placed McClellan on third base. Hrad Anderson An-derson cleared the base with a double which knocked in McClellan and cut Maeser 3rd's lead to 5 to 3. lirad McClellan Mc-Clellan delivered a shot to the first baseman, Dockery, who nabbed the ball, touched the bag and fired the ball to home plate. However, the throw didn't arrive in time and Henry and Anderson scored to tie up the game at 5-5. 5-5. The 5-5 tie was broken by Maeser 3rd due to a two run explosion in the top of the fourth tinning. Stewart singled and advanced to third base David Allen singled and reached second base on an error. Stewart and Allen scored a few minutes later to give Maeser 3rd a 7 5 lead. Another run was walked in when Brad McClellan received a free pass to first base and Jeff McClellan scored to tie up the game at 12-12. Henry gave Maeser 2nd a 13 to 12 lead when he scored on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Allen. Maeser 3rd wanted to score one run for a tie and at least two runs for a lead in the top of the seventh inning, but they netted zero runs and lost the first championship game by the score of 13 to 12.
