The Vernal 3rd car was the only car still in decent condition after the Explorer's Demoli- (ors voir "flstf pfee Vernal 2nd's Cadillac garnered top honors in all three events in the annual Explorer's Demolition Derby at the Maeser Speedway, Friday during the July 24 Pioneer Day celebration. Gary VVatkins was the driver behind the steering wheel as Vernal 2nd captured cap-tured first place in the flat track race. Vernal 9th's. Jet Star One Oldsmobile. which was driven by Boyd Russell, collected col-lected second place honors and Vernal 6th, which was driven by Kevin Campbell, Camp-bell, placed third. Vernal 3rd captured fourth place. The car was driven by Lonnie Williams. Vernal 6th's car had some problems on the track. The car delivered a couple of shots in the first heat of the demolition derby and then died and didn't compete in any more smashing action. However, the car came alive after the derby. tro! and was smashed by the Vernal 3rd car. The blow knocked the Vernal 6th car completely off the track. However, the cars returned to the traci and finished the race. The first heat of the demolition derby was next and after a few shots. Vernal :Srd's car retired as every time it received receiv-ed a blow, a wire fell off and the engine died. The three remaining cars, Vernal 6th. Vernal 9th and Vernal 2nd, continued con-tinued in the blasting action. The well built Vernal 2nd car, which was driven by Mike Oswald, nabbed first place and the Vernal 9th car, which was driven by Mike Johnson captured second place. The Vernal 6th car, which was driven by Gary Galley, placed third. Vernal ;ird's car was unable to compete com-pete in the second heat in the derby and a broken starter knocked Vernal 6th out of the second derby.
