Show DON'T CALL IT A PAY RAISE! Tuesday, July 21st the Uintah Education Association voted to accept the School Board's offer of a total Package of 12.7. They did so not because they were happy or satisfied with the Package, but because they felt there was little if any chance for anything better. They did so knowing they would have less to live on this coming year than they had to live on last year. The School Board calls the 12.7 a raise. There will be a few more dollars in each pay check, but those dollars will buy less than they did the year before. Inflation ran almost 13 last year. In order for the Board's Package of 12.7 to make up for inflation alone it would have to be equal to at least 15 because the teachers won't see all of the 12.7 Package. One point seven percent is in unspendable income due to increased insurance in-surance rates. That takes the Package down to 11 which will be taxed at approximately a 10 rate which will take our "raise" down to 9.9. Therefore every teacher will be taking home 3 less this year than he did the year before and this doesn't even take into account the ongoing inflation infla-tion rate we face each day. Of the 12.7 Package only 5 is to be put on the salary base itself. The rest may or may not be there next year, putting teachers even further behind. The 12.7 Package is probably the best the Board can offer its teachers, but don't call it a raise. It is really a decrease in pay. A 3 loss in one year may not seem like much, but a 3 loss per year for 10 years leaves a teacher making almost 30 less in spendable income than he did as a first year teacher. Yes, we appreciate what the School Board has done to give the teachers their "Package", and ve realize that the state legislature did much to tie their hands by allocating only a 6 increase in the W.P.U., but please don't tell the public that the teachers are getting a raise. Let the public know they're expecting more for less each year, but that teachers will do the best they can for as long as they can.
