Show Ute Tribe makes appeal on boundary issue The Ute Indian Tribe has filed an appeal of the federal court decision establishing the jurisdictional boundary boun-dary of its reservation in the Uintah Basin. The appeal was filed Tuesday of last week, one day before the deadline for such action. Unless a settlement is reached, the case will go to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, Denver, and a final decision could be at least two years away. Martin Seneca, Washington, D. C, legal counsel for the Utes, advised the Utah attorney general's office of a tentative suggestion for a compromise settlement that, if approved by the tribe, could result in canceling the appeal. In its suit against Duchesne County and city and Roosevelt City, the tribe sought jurisdiction within original boundaries of the Uintah Valley and adjacent Uncompahgre Reservations, total of 4,287,474 acres, including the 1.3 million acres of trust lands which it has long controlled. U. S. District Judge Bruce J. Jenkins, in his June 19 decision, drew a boundary boun-dary adding 626,474 acres to the land under tribal jurisdiction, in addition to the trust lands, about 21 percent of additional area the tribe had sought. Judge Jenkins excluded from the reservation the 5,000-acre Gilsonite Strip west of Vernal, the 56,000 acre Strawberry reclamation area, 1,010,000 acres set aside for national forests and 1.29 million acres of the Uncompahgre Reservation (all of it except 510,000 acres of trust lands) which the judge said was disestablished by previous federal action. , 1 V r ?
