Show Kids help keep Flaming Gorge clean In an effort to reduce and eventually eliminate litter on the National Forests, Flaming Gorge Ranger District has initiated a "litter incentive program". Designed primarily for youngsters, the plan is to award various "woodsy owl" prizes to participants who gather sufficient amounts of litter on the National Recreation Area. Children who wish to participate in the program should check in at either the Flaming Gorge Dam or Red Canyon Visitor Centers. With parental permission per-mission they will be given the necessary litter bags and instructions, then sent out to embark on their collection endeavors. Depending on whether the visitors return to the centers with '2, 1 or 2 bags of litter (from off the ground - not personal trash) they will be awarded their choice of prizes. These prizes cannot be purchased and so become a special momento in addition to being a well earned award that kids are proud to display. Even more important than earning a prize, the little incentive program helps participating children develop an early appreciation for cleanliness in the out-of-doors and respect for nature's unspoiled un-spoiled beauty. The program is proving itself quite successful in making the Ashley National Forest a much cleaner and more beautiful place for all visitors to enjoy. Flaming Gorge NRA offers camping, hiking, fishing and boating, and attracts at-tracts visitors from all parts of the nation. Both visitor centers are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through the summer and a self-guided tour is available at the dam from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. |
