X Vernal 5fh detfeati j D Vernal 5th finished in second place in the Ashley Stake and Vernal 6th placed first, but Vernal 5th defeated Vernal 6th in the first championship game in the LDS Regional Senior Tournament by the score of 8 to 6, Saturday. Vernal 6th won the second game and the championship cham-pionship 23 to 8. The Vernal 5th crew leaped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Dave Swett belted the softball for a double. dou-ble. The ball bounced over the fence. Swett scored Vernal 5th's first run in the game and the team added two more counters in the top of the first inning. Vernal 6th was held scoreless in the first three innings, but, the team gained two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning inn-ing to cut Vernal 5th 's lead to 3 to 2. Arvel Tassainer reached first base on an error and Kent Bigelow singled. Tassainer Tas-sainer advanced to third base and Bigelow moved to second base. Portor Phillips connected for a single to drive in Tassainer and Bigelow. Dee Wilcox reached first base and Ron Solomonson was walked to load up the bases. It appeared that with the bases loaded and nobody out that Vernal Ver-nal 6th was going to score some more runs. However, Steve Stokes decided that Vernal 6th didn't need any more runs in the bottom of the fourth as he nabbed a line drive by Ron Enloe, gained gain-ed a force out at third base and fired the ball to Billie Smith at third base for a triple play. Dave Swett hit the softball and reached reach-ed third base on an error and crossed home plate a few minutes later. Karl Wright ran over Ron Enloe at home plate to give Vernal 5th a 5 to 2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Leo Jorgensen and Tod Tesar singled and King got on base to load up the bases. Leo Jorgensen scored and Tesar and King darted in a few minutes later to tie up the game at 5-5. Vernal 5th's Steve Judd singled and Curg Belcher and Danny Gross loaded up the bases on errors. Judd, Belcher and Gross crossed home plate due to some errors and excellent base running to give Vernal 5th an 8 to 5 lead. Vernal 6th scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the final score: Vernal 5th, 8 and Vernal 6th, 6. Ron Enloe singled and a few minutes later scored the final run.
