Show In The good Sid Says 30 YEARS AGO August 3, 1950 Uintah County's first draft call has been increased from 7 to 10, according to Mrs. Evelyn Slaugh, clerk of local board 32. Unless the schedule is changed, Uintah's contribution of 10 men to the Utah Draft Call will leave Aug. 14. Brig. Gen. J. Wallace West, Adjutant general of Utah selective service announced an-nounced last week that Utah's first draft call has been more than doubled increased from 307 to 624. This increase was necessary to meet the national draft quota which president Harry Truman increased from 20,000 to 100,000. Salt Lake County will furnish the bulk of Utah's draft quota. The new call means that Salt Lake County will furnish 249 men, instead of the original 98 scheduled to be called up August 14. Other members of Local Board 32 are Alvin E. Weeks, chairman; Charles A. Hatch and John Koiter, board members; mem-bers; Hugh W. Colton, appeal agent, and Dr. F.G. Eskelson, medical advisor. ad-visor. "No bird soars too high if he soars with his own winas." At the same time Salt Lake sweltered in a record breaking 107 and even Roosevelt was in the 105 range. After that big effort the tired thermometer ther-mometer dropped, aided by short showers, until it was a "chilly" 87 Sunday. After the little rest, the climb started again and Tuesday's high was 92 with further outlook still "warmer". Two cases of measles and one case of strep infection were reported in Uintah County for week ending July 22, according ac-cording to Utah State Dept. of Public Health Report. Frontier Airlines this week received the Award of Merit from the National Safety Council for its outstanding safety record. The airline was one of the 21 domestic territorial and overseas air carriers honored by the Council with its avaition safety award. The award is made to airlines which do not have a fatal accident during the calendar year, and which, in addition, have a major accident rate lower than the average rate for their group of airlines during the preceeding three years. |
