The fire claimed the life of its 74-year-old occupant. The fire burned the shed behind the Nielson Country Store in Lapoint. Six fires hifl eouravy carecs'-during one week Six fires were reported in Uintah County this week one claimed the life of a 74-year-old man and another destroyed the back of a Lapoint store. Flames did $15,000 in damages to a storage shed, 40 by 25 feet, located behind the Nielson Country Market in Lapoint. Assistant Lapoint Fire Chief David Lundberg, who lives close to the store, saw the smoke coming out of the south side of the building at 11:28 a.m.. Wednesday, July 30. After Lundberg removed some horses from the shed, he went to the Lapoint Fire Station to sound the alarm. Vernal and Roosevelt Fire Departments Depart-ments were dispatched to help with the fire, but according to Lapoint Fire Chief Ernest Ahlborn, the fire was" under control by the time they arrived. A safety valve on a propane tank next to the store let loose and set flames into the air, Ahlborn added. The store suffered smoke and water damage plus the fire got into the attic area. About 35 tires, two motorcycles, a pool table and other items were destroyed by the fire. Marion Wall Apblanalp, 74, died in a trailer fire southeast of the John K. Abplanalp residence, 1150 East 3500 South. According to Dale Slaugh, Vernal-Utntah County Fire Chief, the 12-foot trailer was engulfed in flames when fireman arrived at the scene. Abplanalp was found dead in the trailer. Cause of the fire is unknown, Slaugh said. Estimated damages were $400 to the trailer and $1,000 to the contents. Also on July 29, firemen responded to a fire at Woods Auto, 10 South 1000 West. The fire originated from a car on a hoist. Actual cause of the fire is under investigation. Damages were listed at $14,000. Fireman Coke Jefferies was taken from the scene in an ambulance suffering from smoke inhalation. Jefferies' condition was not serious. A Monday, Aug. 4, fire in Jensen burned a shed belonging to Stanley Allen. The fire destroyed 50 tons of green hay. Loss to the building was $2,000. Fireman fought the fire for two hours. Cause is undetermined. Other minor fires reported by the Vernal Fire Department was a grass fire Aug. 4, a fire causing no damage at the James Marshall residence at 603 North 3500 West, and a shed fire at Fifth East and 5000 South causing $1,400 in damages. |
