OCR Text OPINION HITS HOSPITAL GIFT PROVO A question as to whether or not 127.000 donated to the Utah valley hospital fund by Provo City. Utah, Juab and Wasatch counties can be legally given was raised here Wednesday by an opinion of Joseph Chei, Utah attorney general, gen-eral, given to Arnold Roylance, county attorney. Mr. Chei said he did not believe cities and counties could legally give money to private enterprises, even though they were to be operated for the benefit of the community. They could, however, appropriate money for services rendered by the hospital. hos-pital. Mr. Roylance agreed that It was alio doubtful that Provo City could buy and give the site of the hospital units rontracts were drawn up so jthat the hospital would give ser-: ser-: vices in return, thereby bringing the transaction within the law. Provo City has appropriated J1S.-000 J1S.-000 toward the fund; Utah county. J 10.000: Juab and Wasatch county, each 11000. In addition, Utah county has guaranteed an operating deficit of tSOOO for the first year and S4000 for each year thereafter for four years. Supplemented by $1000 per year for the five years from Juab county. ai . hrakfat of more than 80 workers in the fund drive held here Wednesday it was reported that contributions con-tributions to date total $63,000. With the goal set at $90,000 and less than two months' time to raise the remainder, re-mainder, John O. Beesley, drive chairman, said efforts must be renewed re-newed with increased vigor and urged workers to finish their districts dis-tricts at once. Mr. Beesley said the only effect of the present question of the legality of city and county gifts to the fund would be to increase the vigor of the drive. Legal opinion on the matter was sought by Attorney Roylance at a request of commonwealth fund officials offi-cials of New York City, who have agreed to match the community share with $200,000, providing the $90,000 is raised by October. Residents of the hospital have given wholeheartedly, according to Mr. Beesley, and results have been above expectation. Many have contributed liberally, beyond their quota. A recent example is that of the Uintah national forest office, which, with nine employes, gave $196.10. an average of $22 each. William E. Zobell and Arthur D. Coleman, Provo, were recommended to fill vacancies in the board of directors di-rectors by members of the executive execu-tive committee following the breakfast break-fast Wednesday. It was also decided de-cided to launch the drive into the residential section within a few days.
