Show NAVY TO PROBE -STEAMDEATHS PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 1 W A naval board of Inquiry examined twisted wreckage In the fire room of the V. 8. deitroyer Casein today, seeking raune of a bunting (team line yesterday that killed seven men. six civilian employee and an enlisted man and scalded eight others. Dead Meted Killed by jets of live steam and fragments of the pipe were W. T. McCallum, Philadelphia, an enlisted enlist-ed man; Joseph Vassaluzzi, Mich-ael Mich-ael Scavo. William Mehl and Louis Sherby, all of Philadelphia; George Dreiabach, Oaklyn, N. J, and Daniel Dan-iel Vautier, Camden, N. J., civilian employes. Injured navy men were Lieutenant Lieuten-ant Henry H. Marshall, Markheim, Vs., engineering officer of the destroyer; de-stroyer; D. H. Phillippe. San Jose, Cel.; T. L Athey. Hagerstown. Md.. and A. L Kohlstrom. Worcester, Mass., firemen; A. E. Bryan, Johnstown, Johns-town, Pa.; C. L. Minnehan. Water-town. Water-town. Mass., and. John Koif, We-nonah, We-nonah, li. J, water tenders. The civilian employe was Jerome Sullivan, Sulli-van, Philadelphia. liivee Statement Lieutenant Commander William W. behrens said; 'The men were railing aleam to. test the safety valve. Steam was being put into the main steam line when it exploded." Captain U. M. Baum, chairman of the naval inquiry committee, said; "We are especially anxious to determine if the men who lost their lives did so trying to rescue others or if they were working in the fireroom when the steam line carried away." |
