John Johnston, 90 years old, a pioneer pio-neer of the gold days of '49 in California, Califor-nia, cattle man and miner of Utah, died early yesterday morning at the home of his "son, Edward A. Johnston, 1343 Roosevelt avenue. Mr. Johnston was chief of the clan of Johnston of Elsio-shields, Elsio-shields, on tho Scottish border. He was born at Fort Covington, New York, the son of James Johnston, brother broth-er of the Earl of Annandale, to whose title he would have succeeded save for tho usurpation of tho title and estates by another branch of the family. At the completion of the high school course at Fort Covington, John Johnston John-ston joined the rush of the gold seek ers to California. He crossed the isthmus isth-mus of Panama on foot to reach the California mountains, where he prospected pros-pected successfully for a number ot years. He returned to New "iork state and lived there for thirty-five years, coining to the west again in 1S90. Three sons and one daughter survive him: David H. Johnston of Clayton, N. M.; Joseph V, Johnston of Detroit, Mich.; Edward A. Johnston, and Mrs. Hugh McGean, Salt Lake. Another sou was police serveant, John Henry Johnston, John-ston, who was shot and killed July 5, 1911, in tho performance of his duty, by Elmer L. Dewey. Funeral services will he held at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning from the chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery. |
