Show U. S. WOOL GLUT KM ME Utah Senator Declares All Rumors of Crowding Market Are False. Special, to The Tribune WASHINGTON, July 31. Following the receipt of several telegrams from Utah wool men, Senator King today conferred with officials of the war, state and commerce com-merce departments and learned that there is no foundation for reports current cur-rent In the west to the effect that the government Is dumping its large . wool supply on. the market or that it is proposing pro-posing to import large quantities of Australian Aus-tralian and New Zealand wool to sell at auction prices. War department officials told Senator King they would live up to their agreement agree-ment with the wool men and keep their wool off the market until November 1. The state and commerce department said no large Importations of wool from the antipodes were planned and that only e small quantity of high-grade merino wool is to be Imported for mixing with domestic do-mestic clips to produce certain established estab-lished fabrics. Senator King is preparing and tomorrow tomor-row will introduce a bill appropriating , $500,000 to establish at Ogden a plant of ', the bureau of mines to make tests of I lignite oil distillates and oil shales. After conferring with the bureau of mines Senator Sen-ator King is convinced there Is need for such a plant In the west and Ogden seems to be centrally located with respect re-spect to tho lignite and shale fields, not only of T'tah. but Wyoming. Montana, Nevada nnd Colorado. The purpose of establishing this plant, Scnn tor King says, is to hasten experiments experi-ments to determine the best methods of using commercially the lignites that abound In the west and more particularly particu-larly to determine methods whereby shales may be made to yield oil In commercial com-mercial quantities, and also to determine the specific uses for which lignite coals nnd oil recovered from shale may best be adapted. The progressive spirit of Ogden, Og-den, Its central location and its accessibility acces-sibility as a shipping point, he contends, make It the proper location for a bureau bu-reau of mines plant of the type specified in his bill. The house of representatives today Passed the Hawly bill, waiving the requirements re-quirements of SlOii worth of assessment work on mining claims during l!U9. The bill will be given prompt consideration by tho senate committee on mining and Its early 'passoge by the senate is expected. Senator King, who has had numerous letters from Utah urging the passage of I tills bill, has discussed it with members of the committee and has been assured it will be favorably reported to the senate. Senator King called on President Wilson Wil-son this morning and urged htm to so arrange his trip through the west that he can be In Salt Iike during the governors gov-ernors convention. He also Urged the president to spend a few davs In the Yellowstone Yel-lowstone park. The president Is revising his itinerary and said he would not be able to announce definite dates for several sev-eral days. |
