Modifications may be mado in the closing regulations promulgated from tho department of commercial economy with reference to Salt Lake, the exeeti-tivo exeeti-tivo committee of the state council of defense yesterday afternoon voting to leave decision on this matter to the city council of defense. The conclusion was reached after a review of telegrams and other correspondence corre-spondence received from all parts of the United States in reply to inquiries as to commercial economy closing methods meth-ods pursued. Recognizing that conditions vary throughout the state, and that uniform state-wide closing regulations would not be desirable, the executive committee commit-tee stated that it would recommend to the stato council that each county and city council of defense assume charge in operation of regulations that, in their opinion, will best fit their local necessities. necessi-ties. Revision Expected. This means that tlio entire question of closing hours for Salt Lake will undergo un-dergo discussion before the city council of defense in conference with business men concerned, and that there will be a consequent revision of the regulations issued by Commissioner W. F. Jensen. Resolutions protesting against the nqrlv nlncl,, 1...; .l yesterday at a joint meeting of the committee appointed by the wholesale and retail department, membership council and officers of the Salt Lake Commercial club, and were indorsed by the board of governors of the club. After setting forth that the merchants mer-chants of Utah are willing and do subscribe sub-scribe with a whole-souled spirit, no matter what the cost or sacrifice; to the proposition of "anything to win the war," it is declared that a proper consideration con-sideration and hearing should bo allowed al-lowed those concerned and satisfactory reasons given for such rulings and regulations regu-lations as, in the opinion of the commissioner, commis-sioner, should be put into effect. Competitors Benefit. It is declared that the merchants of Utah cannot understand why they should be governed by rules and regulations regu-lations that cripple their business when their competitors in surrounding states are under no such rules and regulations. Rulings that do not actually conserve man-power or do not effect a needed economy should not have been issued, it is protested, and it is argued that the community store and cross-roads merchant make only half a living at best, and to close them at an early hour does not effect an economy, but ofter occasions loss in time and money to citizens citi-zens requiring wares and help. Attention Atten-tion is called to the fact that the farmer, farm-er, for instance, cannot always leave his harvest at 6 o'clock in the evening. Arbitrary closing hours, it is set forth, do not always conserve manpower, man-power, and employers should be permit- tea to secure lull emciency irom tneir help during regular shifts and not be required to split shifts and hours to satisfy arbitrary closing. |
