It will also furnish the cash for the enlargement of the present plants if it is decided that will be sufficient. But whatever is done must be done quickly, for there must be no falling down of any part of the government's program at this critical criti-cal stage of the war. Fortunately Mr. Schwab is in position to push matters. MORE STEEL NEEDED. The shipping program of the government govern-ment calls for a total of 4,000,000 tons of steel a year, and as the present allowance al-lowance for ships is only 3,500,000 tons, it is plainly to be seen that unless the output can be increased we will be forced to curtail the work iu the shipyards. Chairman Schwab, however, how-ever, does not propose to slacken his endeavors to carry, out the shipbuilding ship-building program iu full and has called a conference of representatives of all the big steel plants to devise means for keeping the government supplied sup-plied with steel, so that there will be no interruption in the war program. The non-essential industries are getting only a small proportion of tho steel needed in their business if allowed to run full .blast, and it would be unwise as well as unjust to cut off such sup- |
