Show MYSTERY OF SIGNAL LIGHTS IS SOLVED Flashes Supposed to Be Code for War Prison Are Nothing More Than Brush Fires. The mystery of the supposed ' ' signal lights" which have been observed in the mountains back of Fort Douglas this summer has been solved. The lights prove to have been nothing more than brush fires. A night or two ago officers at Fort Dougias observed what appeared to be signal lights operating from a point high on the mountainside south of Bed Butte canyon. The two lights appeared to be about 200 yards apart and one above the other. Those who watched the lights for an hour or more describe the flashes of light as resembling the dot and dash of a heliograph. Such flashes have been noted in the mountains back .of the fort on a number num-ber of occasions and reports gained circulation that some one was in the hills communicating with prisoners in the third war prison camp by means of the light telegraph code. hen the lights were seen the other night an investigating party was sent out from the post. The lights were found and proved to be burning brush in a draw on the mountain side. The flashes which resembled dash and dot signals, it was found, were caused by the flickering of the flames due to gusts of wind. Thus the sensational theory of a plot to communicate with interned Germans in the war prison camp is exploded. |
