And keener than the thirst in his pagan iliroaL was the real-i real-i i: i tin n that he had been flouted by the Infant l',H7. His feet once rnoi c upon the ground, t he doughty old Inebriate tossed his heart In Olympian scorn and strode a bit shakily Inward the nearest grog shop. "(rive me two drinks." said the Immortal, Im-mortal, his brow clouded with thought of the possible portent of such a night. 'Have one. on the house, dad," juried ju-ried the barkeeper, after the two bump-cry bump-cry had been tossed off In true drinking Ktyl. The Belated New Year. Thus fortified, the wine pod went forth to laugh a belated heralding; of the advent ad-vent of the new year. Nor was he alone. The streets of Salt lako were peopled cMerriay with persons who had difficulty trying- to feel natural- New year "handovers" "hand-overs" were not being- worn, for the first time in the memory of any of them, and many seemed to feel themselves not fully attired. But with their craft launched upon the lide tiiat had waited In defiance of the old saw, tide of many-colored liquors, sparkling and swift running, the celebrators cele-brators ir.ade fast sailing until they were ready 10 swear before another morning had broken that they had overtaken time also. They scorned all makers of old taws, for to their minds time and tide both had waited, just once. Night Brings Revelers. It was not until night that the Imbibing population of the city began to rid itself of the sense of extreme soberness that the Jirst morning of the year had brought. But with the turning on of the lights "cheer" began to flow. The gluck, gluck, that is the death rattle in the throat of the champagne bottle, could be heard above the orchestra music in the cafes and the cabarets. The belated celebration was on, the endeavor to crowd the revelry of two nights into the hours of one. Of course, there was lacking- the edge of anticipation. It was like the simulated simu-lated joy of a small boy who has found a Bible in his stocking Christmas morning, morn-ing, instead of the epected volume narrating nar-rating the adventures of Captain Kidd. But before morning of January 2 had come many of the revelers wore quite ready to deny that the flowing bowl had remained inverted and unflowing through the- night of New Year's eve. Quiet on Streets. No elaborate observance of Lhe day was conducted in the churches of the city. It was perhaps more a home day, a family fireside day, than any New Year's day has been for many a. year in Salt Lake. Only with the turning on of the electric lights did the celebraters come forth determined de-termined to make up for lost time. Even then they did not congest the streets. It was a cafe and cabaret night. Every place of festive disport men t in the city-was city-was as much congested last night as it was deserted Sunday night Tables had been reserved early and the crowd sat close, each pleasure-intent patron guarding guard-ing acamst loss of his chair, every one of which was at a premium before midnight. mid-night. While there was an effort upon the part of the managements to comply with the law by closing the service bars about midnight, this did not handicap the revelers. revel-ers. Every table was loaded with liquid cheer long before t he word was passed by the waiters that but a few minutes remained for the rilling of orders. Special Features. While the dancing- of the patrons was the big Item of entertainment, special effort ef-fort to enliven the festivities was made by the managements. At the Utah grill the dancing was so popular as to hold lirst place in the whirl of gayety, oblivi-' nu? of any performance by entertainers. Tables groaned under loads of rare and costly wines and patrons continued to negotiate the intricate steps of the mod-x mod-x crn dance long after the new year would 1 a ve been ushered in if it had reaJiy bcen New Yea r's eve. At the, Newhouse a special bill of entertainment en-tertainment was offered. At the Wilson grill the patrons owned the place, the masked revelers engaging" in a swirl of merrymaking that was kept from rowdyism by the hard, and untiring work of the management. Not for one minute did the crowd remember that It wa s New Yea r' s night. T hey wen t on with the fun until nearly morning-, vainly vain-ly waiting for the din of whistles and bells t:;at would teJ! them that the new-year new-year had been ushered in. Only Cafes Flourish. The Newhouse hotel cafe offered a special spe-cial attraction In a review of "American P. -autles" not roses, but half a score of you tie: women especially engaged and costumed cos-tumed as entertainers for the evening. At the Pemloh-Tjouvre there a-s standing- room only. Not nearly all the customers cus-tomers could be seated and the hilarity continue! until January - liad been well launched. Through ait of the celebration the streets were singularly free of evidence of tli hilarity. Rut few persons were ;o be seen. The celebraters were "making "mak-ing a night of it" and the others all went home earlier. |
