Show HUNT'S FOLLY. Ex-Governor G. W. P. Hunt, of Arizona Ari-zona is a hard loser, so hard in fact that he refuses to turn over the office to his duly elected successor, Thomas E. Campbell, who not only received a plurality of the votes cast, but has the certificate of the secretary of state to show for it. Wilson carried Arizona, along with nearly all the other western states, but , Hunt fell by the wayside, way-side, beaten by members of his own party. Nevertheless he is trying to hold the gubernatorial chair by main strength. He will undoubtedly be ousted by due process of law. The incident recalls" similar case in Nebraska a quarter of a century ago. For the first time in the history of that state a Democrat, James E. Boyd of Omaha, received a majority of the votes cast for governor, greatly to lie surprise of General John M. Thayer, who had held the. office for two terms and had been unhorsed in his third attempt. at-tempt. Like Hunt, the Nebraska "governor "gov-ernor had his office guarded and refused re-fused to step down and out at the duly appointed time. His excuse was that Boyd was not a citizen of the United States, his father not having been naturalized before the Democratic candidate can-didate became of age. Boyd, however, had taken the oath of allegiance and served as a private soldier during the civil war. The "fight over the office lasted for some months, General Thayer being finally ousted by the U. S. supreme court, which held that as Boyd's father had subsequently been naturalized, the newly elected governor was a bona fide citizen. From what we have been able to learn regarding the election in Arizona, Hunt's only hope of hanging on to the governorship lies in his ability to prove the charges .of fraud he has made, since tho count went against him. As- there j are nearly always charges of fraud i made when election contests are very close, there is very good reason to suspect sus-pect that the Arizona election was fair and aboveboard and that Thomas B. Campbell, the Republican candidate, is the duly elected and qualified, governor of the commonwealth, and that Hunt is making an exhibition of himself not at all pleasing to the members of his own party in the border state. He would have been in much better odor had , he stepped, gracefully aside. |
