Show HINDENBURG'S WISDOM, j The success of the Germans in push ! ing on from Wallachia into Moldavia bodes ill for Russia and the road to Odessa, The battles now being fought j are no mere rear guard actions, such as those which have marked the Eu ' manian campaign for nearly a month. They are battles of magnitude along a wide front and are fiercely contested. Nevertheless the Teutonic armies have been able to push the Russians from many positions described by Berlin, and no doubt correctly described, as perma- , ; nent defenses. The marked contrast between the' power of the Russians in tho spring offensive, when they . captured, more than 450,000 prisoners, and their power today shows that something fatal has happened within the Russian lines. The first and the surest guess is that the Russians are short of ammunition. It is surprising, on the other hand, to find how abundantly the Teutons, whether in Dobrud.ja or Moldavia, are supplied with shells. The difficulties of transportation must be gigantic in a conquered country along railway lines which do not coordinate with the rail-, way lines of the central empires. Never-; theless the armies under Von Palken- j hayn, Mackensen and the other Teutonic generals on the Rumanian front are striking blows comparable with those delivered on any part of the eastern froiA in the last year. This is made obvious by the reports which tell ot "first line trenches demolished " by Teuton shellfire. To demolish scientifically scientifi-cally constructed trench organizations of a permanent character an immense quantity of shells is required. "Whatever "What-ever is necessary the Teutonic armies seem to have. i i Von Hindenburg and his able aide Ludendorff, evidently have gauged the situations on all fronts with accuracy. They foresaw that there would be ; continued deadlock in France, that tho Soloniki drive would come to a standstill and that the Russians could not conduct a sufficiently strong offensive offen-sive in Galicia or the Carpathians to relieve the pressure of a titanic offensive offen-sive by the Teutons in Rumania. And Von Hindenburg determined to make the Rumanian offensive titanic evu at the risk of thinning some of the lines on the other fronts to the danger point. Every man, gun and shell needed for success in Rumania has been sent to that front. The result has demonstrated demon-strated the complete soundness of Von Hindenburg 's iudcmet. |
