Show policemen mm B! DESERETWALKERS Fast Gymnasium Athletes Have Four-lap Lead in Five-mile Race. The police force were the victims of the Deseret gym walking team yesterday morning in a five-mile walking race. The cops were bested by over four laps and never were in the lead from start to linish. The time ot the gymnasium team was 41 h'2 minutes. The police showed the lack of practice, while the gym members walked in excellent excel-lent form. Some of the guardians of the peace set a fast pace for some distance, only to give out, while the Deseret gym entrants usually came forth with a sprint in the last lap. At the start John A. Egbert, (police) could not keep up the speed set by B. Maulder (Deseret), and the gym lad was one and one-o,uarter laps ahead at the conclusion of -his seventh lap.' S. Um-pleijy Um-pleijy (Deseret) brought the lead up to two laps in his race with D. H. Clayton (police), while John Giles (Deseret) came through with one-quarter lap increase over W. K. Crow (police). John Fetzger (Deseret) increased the space one-quarter lap over C. A. Mlddleton (police), while on the next relay Leon Mayhue (police',) took back one-quarter lap from Bobby Richardson (Deseret), making the gymnasium's gym-nasium's lead two and one-eighth laps. Charlie Welch (Deseret) and Charles Jor-gensen Jor-gensen (police) went even for their half-mile, half-mile, but McKeith Burt (Deseret) had a distance of two and one-half laps between him and J. P. Emery (police). Al Warden War-den (Deseret) was matched with R. Mar-chant Mar-chant (police), and Warden added another an-other one-half lap to the gymnasium's lead. Oscar Kirkham (Deseret) had a hard time with C. M. Gregory (policer, bu succeeded In adding another one-quarter lap to his team's lead. and Richard1 Onions (Deseret) finished up four and one-elerhth laps ahead in the final relay against F. B. Tripp (police). I Crow. Mayhue and Jorgensen were the best men for the police force, while Richard Rich-ard Onions. Maulder, Giles and Kirkham showed up the best -'for the winners. John Egbert of the police force and Al Warden of the Deseret gym met in a two-lap sprint following the walking race. - Warden won out after a poor start. A large crowd was on hand to witness the event and much enthusiasm was shown by sunnorters of both sides. |
