Show MILLION ACRES WILL BE OPEiDIi UTAH The Ferris bill, signed by President Wilson Wil-son a few days ago. means much to Utah, but just how much at the present time is a matter of conjecture. However, thi new act throws open to homesteaders of Utah about l.OnO.ofln acres of semi-arid, nonirrigable and nontimbcr binds suitable suit-able for grazing, with an allotment of 640 acres to each applicant. As an incentive to stock misers it will bring to Utah an industry which in the end will prove most remunerative to those willing to venture or those already engaged in that, pursuit. G. R Rlakely of the United states land office was in receipt of a telegram Salur-fbi Salur-fbi y from Commissioner Clay Tall man, dated Washington, stating that applicants must file their applications with their petitions asking that land' he designated them under the Ferris act, and if the land they seek comes under the terms of the act they will have a claim to priority and in due time the petitions will be passed upon according to their merits. j .lust what lands have been set aside under this act Mr. Blakely docs not know, . inasmuch as he is not familiar with the I new legislation, and is awaiting further instructions from Wash i net on. However, if the land designated by the applicants cornea within the scope of the act the matter of priority will play an important part. Until the land is specified the applications ap-plications will be held in the land office. In making application for land under the new act, Mr. Blakely states it will be necessary to have two witnesses sign the petitions of the applicants and, following fol-lowing the receipt of the petitions, time must be allowed the home office to receive re-ceive instructions from Washington. While the Ferris bill will open to homesteaders home-steaders for livestock purposes about 200ioo,noo H'"res of land in the western country, there will be but 1.000,000 acres available In the state of Utah. Alaska can boast of "TTi.OOO.OOO acres. It js said that this land is not good for farming purposes, beins of a chuss particularly adapted to grazing. |
