Following Follow-ing a sweeping victory at the polls of the Citizens ' league, formed when tho name of the city was changed from Berlin Ber-lin to Kitchener, with a view to reverting revert-ing to the original name, a riot was started by the men of the 118th battalion, bat-talion, who are on furlough, and the city is under martial law tonight. A hundred men of the 122nd Muskoka battalion, stationed at Gait, are patrolling patroll-ing the streets. When it became known that the Citizens' league not only had elected Alderman David Gross as mayor, but had carried the entire slate, the soldiers of the 118th formed a parade through the streets, shouting: ''Are we down-hearted ? No! ' ' Some one attempted at-tempted to tear away a Union Jack which one of the soldiers was- carrying, and the riot started. Provost Marshal Osborne of the London Lon-don district ordered the soldiers to disperse, dis-perse, but without result, and he at once sent a call to Gait for a guard. The soldiers raided a newspaper office, and two members of the newly-elected council were injured. H. N. Bowman was struck on the head and is in a serious seri-ous condition from concussion of the brain. N. Asmussen was hit on the forehead, hut was not so badly hurt. The provost marshal again ordered the men to disperse and declared martial law. The arrival of the hundred men from Gait put an end to the disorder. |
