Show 0 MILK STATIONS TO BE ESTABLISHED Efforts of Health Department to Minimize Infant Mortality Mor-tality to Be Enlarged. At least three municipal milk stations, sta-tions, and possibly four, will bo established estab-lished early this summer by the city health department, according to announcement an-nouncement of plans by Dr. Samuel G. Paul, health commissioner, yestorday. Tho one station maintained throughout through-out tho latter half of tho summer last year proved so efficacious in tho saving of baoies7 lives and in spreading education edu-cation as to tho proper mothods of rearing babies that the health commissioner commis-sioner has decided to devote special attention at-tention to this field hereafter. Provision for two stations already has boon mado in tho health department depart-ment budget, and Dr. Paul is confident confi-dent he will bo able to provido another an-other when the time comes for opening them. It will not be possible to open tho stations with tho present force of district nurses until after school closes early in June, though if a spell of hot weather comes beiorc that timo Dr. Paul will ask for special nurses with which to conduct the milk stations. Othorwise, ho will open tho stations about tho middlo of Juno, and will assign as-sign to them tho nurses now engaged in school inspection work. By means of tho milk stations tho health department is able to insure an absolutely puro milk supply to the babes of mothers who aro not in a position po-sition to obtain such. As puro milk is a vital necessity in rearing young babies, ba-bies, one of tho most important causes of infant mortality is thus eliminated. Tho milk is given away in cases where tho mothers aro of tho pooror classes, and it is sold at cost to others. Tho milk stations will bo mado headquarters head-quarters for a campaign of education along all lines pertaining to better health and sanitation. Physicians connected con-nected with tho health dopartmont will maintain rogular office hours each day at the stations, and mothors with ailing ail-ing babies may consult them froo of charge. Tho station also gives tho department de-partment entrance to homes whoro enlightenment en-lightenment as to methods of raising babies is badly needed. Tho nurses attached at-tached to each station follow into the homos all cases brought to their attention at-tention an a result ot mothors calling at the station and work of an incalculable incalcula-ble value is thus mado possible. "I bolievo that with thrco or four milk stations in operation this year it will bo possiblo to reduce infant mortality, mor-tality, due to the ills incidont to hot woaher and poor milk, to tho lowest possiblo minimum in Salt Lako," Dr. Paul said yestorday. |
