I "CHIEF SAM" LEAVES NEGROES STRANDED NEW YORK, March 7. "After a long dclnv the steamer Curityba, on which "Chief Sam" was to carry a largo number of negroes to a colony on tho Gold coast of Africa, sailed to'day, but not for tho promised land. She is on her way to Portland, Me., whore Sam faid the vessel would be overhauled and put into shape for tho African voyage. Some jeventy negro men and women, who havo boen using tho ship na an ark, wore, placed nahore before the j steamer sailed. Sam said ho would pav I thoir railrond faros to Portland, where j they would bo allowed to go on board again. The nocroes left behind wore some of a number who, nftcr paying their transportation and buying shares in the Akim Trading company at $25 each, had little money left.
