Show "KELLY'S ARMY." California's army iB hithcrward bound. It is commandod by a General Kelly, and his namo recalls another army which passed through this region years ago. It was commanded by a General Kellcy. It is said that iu the army was a youth, unknown to fame at tliat time, but now one of America's greatest novolists, no less a porsou than Jack London. As Shakespcaro says: Sweet are the u.sc3 of adversity, Which Hko u toad, ugly and venomous. Wears yet a precious Jewel In his head. California people are ndoptiug probably prob-ably tho best method of dealing with this army of tho unemployed. They are feeding the members of tho host, now amountine to something over "1100 ofii-cers ofii-cers and privates, and aro speeding them on their way. To be rid of them as soon as possible is the desire of the various towns in California through which they aro passing or arc about to pass. Utah could probably do no better than to follow tho California method. Lf tho army survives until it crosses tho Missouri river, it may havo gained so many recruits that drastic meu'sures will bo necessary, but in the western country, if tho army does not grow much larger than it is at present, the varioua citlos along its routo probably will bo justified in treating tho unemployed unem-ployed with mildness and hastening their departure to tho east. |
